Find out more about Christmas

Christmas Day is celebrated on 25 December.

Many people celebrate Christmas by visiting family and friends, sharing delicious food and drink and taking part in festive activities like decorating Christmas trees, ice skating and writing Christmas cards.

Christmas is a Christian celebration which marks the birth of Jesus Christ, believed by Christians to be the Son of God.

The most popular Christmas traditions involve giving gifts, decorating homes and helping those who are in need.

Each country that observes Christmas will celebrate differently, although there will be similarities, for example, giving gifts and spending time with loved ones is a tradition that is shared by many across the world.

The classic tradition is to put up your Christmas tree 12 days before Christmas Day on the 13 December, but it's up to you! Many people will put up there Christmas tree as early as possible to make the most of the festive season.

Christmas is seen by many people as a time for spreading kindness and will show this by giving each other gifts at Christmas. Christians also believe the giving of gifts to be a celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ.

Every Christmas gift is unique to the person, depending on what they like. At Lidl, we have lots of gift ideas for friends and family that will put a smile on their faces this Christmas.

At Christmas, many people follow tradition and eat a roast turkey complete with all the trimmings: pigs in blankets, roast potatoes, stuffing and vegetables. But of course, there's lots of other tasty options like roast beef and duck. For vegetarians and pescatarians , try a whole salmon or a nut roast on Christmas Day – delicious!

Christmas cake, puddings and mince pies can all be made ahead of Christmas Day. Take a look at the Lidl Christmas recipe collection to start planning what tasty goodies you'll be cooking up!

A Christmas turkey or turkey crown is roasted in the oven and recipes can vary depending on family traditions. Many people stuff their turkey with festive stuffing and even cover it with bacon for extra flavour.

Popular drinks on Christmas Day include Bucks Fizz, Champagne or cocktails and mocktails. For inspiration, check out our Christmas drinks recipe range.

Boxing Day takes place on 26 December.

Boxing Day gets its name from Queen Victoria's reign when the rich would box up gifts and give them to the poor. Boxing Day was also given as a day off for servants who would also receive a Christmas box from their employers before spending time with family.

New Year's Eve falls on the 31 December.

New Year's Eve is celebrated by spending time with friends and family. Many people attend New Year's Eve parties and stay up until midnight to see in the new year. It is also a common tradition to make new year resolutions.

Dishes served on New Year's Eve will depend on the country and the traditions of different households. Many people will serve party food or big dishes that can be shared around with friends and family. Some foods are also traditionally served as they are considered good luck.
